Every spring we get the same question from customers: gazebo or pergola? It's a fair thing to wonder about. They look similar in photos, they both sit in your garden, and they both promise to make your outdoor space more usable. But they're quite different things, and picking the wrong one is an expensive mistake.
So let's sort it out.
What's the actual difference?
A gazebo has a proper roof. Fabric, polycarbonate, whatever the material, the point is that when it rains, you stay dry. Most have four sides and a solid frame, and the better ones have netting or curtain panels you can pull across. They're built to be used in real British weather, which is the whole point.
A pergola is more of an open structure. Think slatted roof, climbing plants, that kind of look. They're beautiful in a Mediterranean garden on a sunny afternoon. In a UK garden in April, you'll be back inside within twenty minutes.
That said, a lot of modern pergolas now come with retractable canopies, which changes things completely. Close it when it rains, open it when the sun comes out. It genuinely is the best of both worlds.
So which one should you actually get?
If you want an honest answer, most people in the UK are better off with a gazebo, or a pergola that has a retractable waterproof canopy. An open pergola is lovely to look at, but you'll use it about four times a year.
The exception is if you want something more permanent and architectural, something that becomes part of the garden rather than just sitting in it. In that case, a solid pergola with a good canopy is worth the extra spend.
What we would actually recommend
If you want proper rain cover
The 3 x 3m Steel Pergola Gazebo with Retractable Roof (wisegalleria.co.uk/products/outsunny-3-x-3m-steel-pergola-gazebo-with-retractable-roof-garden-gazebo-canopy-sun-shade-shelter-for-outdoor-deck-patio-dark-grey) is a bit of a cheat in the best way. It looks like a pergola but has a retractable canopy so you get real shelter when you need it. Steel frame, dark grey finish, solid build. It is the one we would go for if we had a medium-sized patio and wanted something that works year-round.
If you are short on space
The 2.4 x 2.4m Wall-Mounted Lean-To Gazebo (wisegalleria.co.uk/products/outsunny-2-4-x-2-4-m-wall-mounted-pergola-gazebo-with-pa-coating-fabric-and-metal-frame-upf30-lean-to-garden-gazebo-wind-resistant-outdoor-sun-shade-shelter-for-garden-deck-cream-white) attaches to the back of your house so it does not eat up your whole garden. UPF30+ fabric, wind-resistant frame, and it comes in cream white or dark grey. Great for smaller gardens or anyone who wants a covered area right outside the back door.
If you entertain a lot
The 3.5 x 3.5m Retractable Canopy Gazebo (wisegalleria.co.uk/products/outsunny-3-5m-x-3-5m-metal-pergola-gazebo-awning-retractable-canopy-outdoor-garden-sun-shade-shelter-marquee-party-bbq-grey) has a bigger footprint, more headroom, and is proper party-hosting territory. If you are the kind of person who has people round every other weekend through summer, this is the one to go for.
A few things worth checking before you buy
Whatever you go for, look at the wind rating. This matters more than most people realise, especially if your garden is exposed or you are near the coast. Also check whether anchor kits are included, because a gazebo that is not properly secured is a real problem on a windy day.
If you are thinking about something permanent, it is worth a quick check with your local council about planning permission. Most garden structures are fine under permitted development, but better to know before you start building.
